Play to Earn games (P2E) are cryptocurrency-based games which enable players to monetize their time spent in-game by operating, leasing, and selling in-game objects. These objects are typically NFTs and the buying, selling, and lending of these assets make it possible to earn an income from playing the broader game. Players can become owners of in-game assets represented by NFTs or digital currencies which turns gamers into investors through gameplay. NFTs are able to deliver digital rights to participants in blockchain games and virtual worlds. As they are unable to be easily duplicated, NFTs solve the cloning problem which traditionally reduced the value of in-game assets, thus limiting profitability and financial incentive through gameplay. In a P2E game, real money can be earned by playing a game. By actively participating in a virtual economy, players earn rewards such as in-game assets and tokens, which may be traded or sold on an open marketplace or for other cryptocurrencies. One of the earliest and most popular P2E games is Axie Infinity, which famously became a major economic support in The Philippines during the Covid-19 crisis.
